My South African Thali

aaah so what do we have here;-)  This is one of my small versions of a thali.

Thali (Hindi: थाली, Tamil: தட்டு, meaning “plate”) is an Indian  meal made up of a selection of various dishes. It simply means a round platter used to serve food.  However mine is made up of a silver plate and a wooden chopping block …:-)

Items of my thali –  Rice – Dhai Khadi – Moong Dhal – papadams – Kasuri Butter Paneer, Chickpea Masala, Cauliflower & Broccoli Subji and Crispy Fried Potatoes. – Vetkoek – mango pickle – Green Chili and carrot salad.

This is one of my South African versions which has been inspired by the traditional Indian thalis from India.  What makes mine so South African is the “Vetkoek”  this replaces the puri or roti and goes perfectly with the green moong dhal, chickpeas as well as the Kasuri (methi) butter paneer.  I will be posting the recipes individually 🙂

Below we have Kasuri Butter Paneer,(http://wp.me/p5WmT0-4N) Chickpea Masala, Cauliflower & Broccoli Subji and Crispy Fried Potatoes.  *Full credit goes to my hubby for the potato dish 🙂  which has been so expertly cooked by him.

Now we have the famous Vetkoek 🙂  Which is a traditional South African dish.  It’s very similar to puri just a little thicker.  These beauties I learnt to make from mom 🙂  which was part of our weekly menu, specifically Tuesday.  Tuesdays was moong dhal and Vetkoek day 🙂
